Templates
A template defines the content a campaign sends. It is built on the Template step of the campaign wizard, after contacts have been uploaded, and it is captured in the snapshot each run takes — so a template change only affects runs created afterwards.
Choosing a Channel
The template editor you get is decided by the campaign's delivery channel, which is chosen at creation and cannot be changed afterwards. To send both an SMS and an email, create two campaigns.
| Channel | Editor | Covered in |
|---|---|---|
| SMS | A single plain-text field with variable insertion, quick-insert opt-out text, character counting, and a phone preview | SMS Templates |
| A multi-tab editor covering body content, sender identity, test data, and attachments, built with either a design or a code editor | Email Templates |
The channel a campaign can use depends on what an Org Admin has configured. If a channel is unavailable in the wizard, see Settings.
Variables
Both channels personalise messages the same way. Variables are placeholders that resolve to that recipient's data when the message is sent, and they come from the columns mapped as Custom Variables during the Add Contacts step. A variable is only offered in the editor if it was mapped, so the contact file effectively decides what can be personalised.
Variables render as tagged placeholders while editing, and resolve in the preview to the example values you supply. If a recipient's row is missing a value for a mapped variable, that contact is treated as invalid at upload time and excluded from the send, so a raw {{placeholder}} is never delivered. See Files and Formats.
Previewing and Test Sends
Every template has a live preview alongside the editor — a phone rendering for SMS, and a desktop/mobile toggle for email — and both channels can send a real test message to a small set of recipients you choose. Test sends use your test data rather than the campaign's contacts, and do not touch the campaign's runs or messages.
Previewing with realistic values matters most where content is variable-driven: an expanded variable changes an SMS's segment count, and therefore its cost and its character limit.
